Edna Griffin Mutual Aid and Des Moines Mutual Aid work together to provide ongoing support for our houseless relatives in so-called Des Moines, IA. 

We organize with them to provide basic necessities, legal support, and eviction defense. In the cold months we focus heavily on survival needs such as propane and heaters. We believe that all peoples have the right to choose where and how they want to live, with dignity and safety.

North Des Moines Mutual Aid created this fridge and pantry to battle food insecurity. The fridge is open to all. Take what you need and/or leave food for others. 

Food donations can be brought directly to the fridge. Monetary donations maintain the fridge. 

Des Moines Mutual Aid maintains a bail fund to keep protesters out of jail. We have managed to post bail for every protester that was elgible and back to the streets since the early days of the protests for George Floyd. Des Moines Mutual Aid also organizes legal representation and court support for those the state has attacked. 

We are abolitionists and reject the idea that our freedom fighters should spend a minute in a cage while they work to destroy the cages around us.

Our mission is to pay immigration bond and pretrial bail to free people from detention. We reject the assumption that imprisonment is necessary or inevitable, affirm the dignity and agency of imprisoned people, and minimize the harm imprisonment inflicts on families and communities. We are committed to acting in solidarity with all movements working to abolish the imprisonment of our fellow human beings.

The prison abolition letter-writing project was started in 2018 as a part of Central Iowa DSA's Prison and Police Abolition Working Group. Anyone who aspires to live in a prison and police-free world is welcome to join us in our organizing.

The purpose of the letter-writing project is to build and maintain a solidarity network between people incarcerated in Iowa and their friends, family, and community members on the outside. Through this network, we are able to organize with our incarcerated comrades to uplift their voices and experiences, publicize issues they face, and work towards our collective liberation.

We meet monthly to write our pen-pals, collectively discuss requests and responses we receive, and organize other projects that further the cause of abolition. Currently, there are abolition letter-writing groups in Des Moines and Sioux City.

Founded in December 2020 the fridge has been in continuous operation, run by a group of individuals and we make sure there is fresh food daily. The fridge is supported by donations and food rescued from grocery stores, event centers, and restaurants.  

Anyone and everyone is welcome. There are no sign ups or requirements. We do not police the community. Scarcity is not real. There is enough for us all.
